VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS
1) Vitamin A / Beta-carotene
- Antioxidants may be useful in RP patients.
- No evidence in favor of vitamin supplementation.
- Annually check liver enzymes and vitamin A levels.
- Beta-carotene doses of 25,000 IU have been recommended.
2) Dosage of Vitamin E (400U/d) were modestly harmful but doses as high as 800 IU/d have been recommended.
3) Although doses of 1000 mg/d ascorbic acid have been recommended, no evidence exists that ascorbic acid is helpful.
4) Lutein is an antioxidant supplement and for blue light absorption.
DIET & EXERCISE
A well-balanced diet with adequate leafy green vegetables that contain above supplements in nontoxic doses. Exercise regularly to keep yourself fit and healthy.
OTHERS
- Cataract surgery might be beneficial.
- Specialists can provide magnifying devices and field-expanding lenses for RP patients who have poor central vision.
- UV-absorbing lenses or tinted lenses are recommended.
- Smoking is always harmful to the body and might as well harmful to your retina and eye. (DO NOT TRY!)
- Viagra; not recommended for RP patients as evidence suggests increased retinal damage with the use of this drug. (DO NOT TRY!)
